I've been cosplaying since 2004 even though I have been making costumes since I was much younger. I was never one for those store bought costumes and wanted to always do something a little different. Costuming lets me feel creative and I enjoy doing it. Let's face it, I'll never be a model, and cosplay isn't serious business. It's a hobby that I have fun participating in.
For those of you who have wandered into this site, you're probably wondering "what's cosplay?" Well, cosplay is a contraction of the words costume and play coined by a japanese visitor to a sci-fi con in the US. Impressed with the costuming he saw, he wrote about it. It grew from there. But essentially, cosplay usually refers to the act of dressing up as characters from japanese manga, video games, and anime. Still interested? Wikipedia can elaborate much more
on the subject.
I attend a good handful of anime and sci-fi conventions each year, as well as cosplay picnics and other related activities, and now I staff or gopher at other conventions. I mostly stick to cons on the east coast because they're closer and affordable. Though I would love to attend cons like AnimeExpo and Dragon*con sometime in the future.
I'm a member of the International Costumer's Guild (ICG) and belong to the the NJ/NY chapter, The Sick Pups. I can't tell you how much I've learned from the meetings I've attended. The members are a wealth of costuming knowledge, tips, and tricks. They are a friendly and fun group who share the love of costuming and I recommend anyone who really enjoys costuming/cosplay to join up with their local chapter.
Besides cosplay, I do spend time tinkering with my motorcycle and I like doing outdoorsy things. Rollerblading, kayaking, whitewater rafting, and fishing. I'm a jeans and tee-shirt wearing kinda gal, and consider myself pretty easy going. Very rarely, besides cosplay, will you ever see me all dolled up.
